01

The Problem

Current products don’t have any indication the price for an item is fair, leaving the user confused and frustrated. This results in them having to spend significant time researching the value of the item on their own.

How might we provide buyers and sellers with the knowledge of a fair market value for the item they are looking to either purchase or sell?

02

Research & Ideation

Findings & Insights

I started my research by focusing on discovering the main user pain points that arise when using existing products. I asked each participant a series of questions based on their previous experience with either buying or selling items online, as well as other questions that would help me design the best product for the user.

6 users interviewed

3 Buyers

3 Sellers

How Often Do You Purchase Secondhand Items Online?

What Are Your Main Frustrations When Buying Secondhand Items Online?

“I want to be able to easily compare and prices, in order to know I am getting the best deal possible.”

User Personas

Creating personas helps identify the target users and the variations between them. Each persona has a user type; Jennifer is a buyer and Nathan is a seller. Below is some more details that pertains to their user type, such as their wants and needs, frustrations and brands they currently use.

03

Execution & Solution

User Flows

These two user flows focus on two different users, one with an existing account who is looking to buy, and one who needs to sign up first and is looking to sell. This covers the majority of users who will be using the product and provides a basic map of their individual journeys through the product.

Wireframes

When designing the wireframes for this product, it was my goal to ensure both the buyer and the seller had access to a simple to understand price-ranking system. Each user flow needed to be attainable through the product’s homepage. The “cart” and “sell” buttons also needed to be accessible from the majority of the product’s pages for a more seamless user flow which would limit the user’s frustration with attempting to return to a specific page.

04

Creating a Brand

Design System

In order to achieve a cohesive brand identity, I created a design system that would act as a roadmap for all of the visual design within the product. I choose the design elements based around a modern UI aesthetic that highlighted the product’s functionality as well as cultivated trust with the user.

Prototype

This prototype highlights some of the core elements of the product. While not every single action a user could take in the final product is included in this prototype, the basic functions needed for user testing are present. The main purpose of this prototype is to test with users and receive any feedback on what can be improved.

05

Refining The Design

For the final stage of this case study, I did a round of user testing. By doing this user testing, I was able to see what errors and tweaks I had to make based on how real people, who did not have anything to do with creating the product, used it. After the testing was complete, I could then update the prototype based on the information that I found.

“I love that I am so easily able to see what a fair price for a product is based on what other items have sold for. I don’t feel like I am getting ripped off.”

Reflection & Next Steps

Given more time…

Key Takeaways

1

The users found the price rating system to be helping in both buying and selling products. The colors that were used made sense and there was virtually no learning curve to figure out what the price rating meant in relationship to the listed item.

2

The main pain-point of the users was addressed when listing an item on Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp. The design solution managed to save the users time and energy that would normally have to be spent on researching the fair market value of their item.

3

The combination of color and numerical text proved to be a good method for delivering the information to the user. The design allows the information to be shrunk into a small area by only using color, as well as expansion by using both a numerical value and color.
